There are two extremes to avoid when it comes to the works of Satan in a Christian’s life. The first is the tendency to fantasize and see him in every shadow of life. This is the thinking of people whose minds are preoccupied with sensationalism that is more akin to a fictional Hollywood production. The other is the thinking that belittles the work of Satan among believers. Such a mindset betrays itself, is naive and denies the truth of Scripture that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but with principalities and powers. It is, therefore, imperative that we are aware of the works of the Evil one among us and be clear about his agenda in his works. What is his agenda?
1. To
make Christians turn against God
Then Satan answered the LORD and
said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and
his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his
hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your
hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” And the
LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him
do not stretch out your hand.” So, Satan went out from the presence of the
LORD. Job 1:9-12
2. To
make Christians rely on their resources
Then Satan stood against Israel
and incited David to number Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of
the army, “Go, number Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a report,
that I may know their number.” But Joab said, “May the LORD add to his people a
hundred times as many as they are! Are they not, my lord the king, all of them
my lord’s servants? Why then should my lord require this? Why should it be a
cause of guilt for Israel?” But the king’s word prevailed against Joab. So,
Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came back to Jerusalem. And
Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. In all Israel there
were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword, and in Judah 470,000 who drew the sword.
But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, for the king’s
command was abhorrent to Joab. But God was displeased with this thing, and he
struck Israel. And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly in that I have
done this thing. But now, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I
have acted very foolishly.” 1 Chronicles 21:1-8
3. To
make Christians anxious and worried
Humble yourselves, therefore,
under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded;
be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion,
seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the
same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout
the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace,
who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm,
strengthen, and establish you. 1 Peter 5:6-10
Put on the whole armor of God
that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not
wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the
spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole
armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done
all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and
having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet,
having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances
take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming
darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all
prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making
supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:11-18
Dear Christian, we have a formidable
enemy, and he is on a mission to sift us like wheat. We dare not take him on in
our own strength, for the arm of flesh will fail. We should, therefore, take
heed to the words of Scripture and be strong in the Lord and in the strength of
his might.
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you for writing this.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the article. May I rephrase your premise? I'd state it thusly for memories sake, "Some see Satan everywhere others see Satan no where." I would suggest another point #5 Satan seeks to keep our focus on self instead of Christ. He desires to make life all about self when in reality we were created For God's purposes and glory.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your encouraging words. They are like apples of gold and underscore the importance of being vigilant in all things, especially in light of our common enemy. God bless you....
